This painting won first place in the prestigious 2009 Wyoming Conservation Stamp art contest. Many years ago, a good falconer friend and I watched a Great Grey Owl hunting from a cottonwood tree over deep, powdery snow. He would scan the snow with those amazing facial disks, sensing sounds of mice running through tunnels under two feet of snow. He'd glide down, disappear into the snow, then break free with a mouse in his foot - simply amazing. That mind's eye image has been with me for over 20 years, and I used it for this painting. The winter before I did this painting, we had four Great Grey Owls in our area, and I got lots of photos of them to use as reference. The State of Wyoming printed about 300,000 of the stamps, and sold them to sportsmen/women to help fund wildlife management in Wyoming. The original is owned by the Wyoming Department of Game and Fish, but a very limited edition of 50 Artist's Proofs is for sale through this website.
