THE SPIRIT OF THE WEST

The model for this painting is a very lovely young woman who lives here in Wyoming, and she posed near the Snake River in a period costume. All my grandparents migrated to Wyoming from the East, and my grandmother pushed a hand cart across the great plains. When she got to Cheyenne at about age 15, they made her the school teacher, as she had more schooling than any of the other kids, regardless of age. She used to tell stories about the boys throwing her in the creek after school many days in the summer. As I was painting this, I was constantly thinking of Grammy Smith, and decided to title it accordingly. She truly was the spirit of the west, and was made of completely different stuff than Americans today.
