This was a commissioned painting of three siblings (who are all now adults) when they were kids - approximately a 20 year leap back in time. The parents wanted a painting of their kids on the beach. We had a lot of old snapshots from the distant past, but none that were of the kids playing on the beach. I began by composing the scene (in pencil sketches), trying to capture the individual personalities, physical characteristics, and likely activities of each kid (the eldest daughter had been a dancer, the other siblings were athletes). There were some photos which showed each kid in a swimsuit, so I was able to get those accurate. The faces in this painting were only about one and a half inches high, which is very challenging for portrait likenesses, but we did achieve very good likenesses. The beach scene, the light/shadows on the figures, the reflections and shadows in the wet sand were all "made up" from imagination. A challenging project, with a successful result.
