I love to paint remote, desolate, and wild places. This ancient Celtic monastery makes me think of the centuries of strife that have raged around it. The Book of Kells is an illuminated scriptural manuscript which was transcribed by Celtic monks. The Vikings raided these monasteries to tear the jeweled covers off these magnificent calligraphed masterpieces, and then destroyed the remains. The Book of Kells, like this ancient structure, is one of the few that survived the raiders, wars, fires, and mayhem of the past.
